What Does the Pressure Release Valve Do, and How Does It Work?

Every case in the Peli Protector, Air, Storm and Micro ranges are fitted with automatic pressure release valves. But what do these mysterious devices actually do?

What Does a Peli Case Valve Do?

Essentially, the valve is there to automatically equalise the interior air pressure, in line with changes to the exterior air pressure. This prevents problems with ‘vacuum lock’, for example after taking the case on a flight, it will never be difficult to get open.

Doesn’t That Mean Water Can Get in?

In a word, no. It allows air to flow, but water, dust and dirt are repelled. We have to get a little more technical to explain exactly how this works.

For Protector and Air cases, the valve is made up of a housing with a hole, covered by a thin Gore-Tex® membrane. This membrane allows the continuous flow of gases and vapours, but it is hydrophobic and therefore repels water molecules.

Do All Protective Cases Feature Pressure Release Valves?

Many brands of protective cases do appear to come with a pressure release valve, however it is important to exercise caution before purchasing.

With some brands, the valve uses less sophisticated technology and is not automatic, requiring manual releasing. There are even some cases where a small valve-like piece of plastic is screwed onto the case, but it actually serves no function.

We can’t exactly pertain not to be biased, but this is just one of the many reasons why, if you’re serious about protection, we’d always recommend going with a genuine Peli / Pelican case to avoid disappointment.
