Matt is a 23-year-old photographic artist and free-lance photographer based in Manchester/Salford.
Brighton born Matt moved up North to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Photography at Manchester School of Art, graduating in July 2017 when he was selected and awarded the Manchester School of Art: Alumni Prize by Brian Griffin, as well as the Castlefield Graduate Prize for his body of work “Falling Apart (Falling Together)”. Since then, Matt has been working on a new series of work due to be exhibited in Leeds, 2018.
Matt’s work varies in context; however, he always chooses to draw on personal experiences and the sculptural encounters within space, whether they are loaded spaces from memory, or the immediate environment he finds himself in. He often finds an oscillation between the landscape and the domestic space, with particular reference to these places as a place of solitude and reflection.
Matt’s work is underlined by a sense of his own performance in these spaces, often working with a dust sheet to isolate or to cover and hide elements that interest him. Through this performance he allows himself to be seen within the environment, even when absent from the frame.
